Abstract

Objective: Cause of death (COD) reported in
the death certificate by using ICD-10 in Panembahan
Senopati General Hospital in Yogyakarta. This study
aims to describe trend of diagnosis and cases of sepsis
reported as the Underlying Cause of Death (UCOD)
in the 2018 and Measure the significance of mortality
rule Method: describes UCOD in death certificate with
sepsis using ICD-10 classified into discharge codes for
infections, systemic inflammatory response syndrome
(SIRS), sepsis by causative microbes, and septic shock
and trend of organ failure. Results: we identified from 364
death certificates reported in 2018. 120 death certificates
were reported as the underlying cause of death due to
organ failure 59%, COD discharge codes for infections,
systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), sepsis
by causative microbes, and septic shock 49% from medical
record. The simulation of the coding process resulted in a
different underlying cause of death for 7.8% of the deaths
with sepsis reported and 2.4% of all deaths, regardless
the original cause. Conclusion: the addition of the ICD-
10 code for sepsis important to select and highlighting the
need to improve mortality rule and COD could affect the
mortality statistics
